Scar. Hand and machine sewn pillow. 10.5” x 13.5” x 3.5”. June 2012.
This piece will be shown at the BACKLASH 2012 show in New York this summer. It is a reference to the contradiction in our society where female sexuality is shamed (the white, pristine silk that should remain clean) but women are valued only as sexual objects (the desire to touch and feel the pillow, which would dirty it). The stitching and binding reference the vagina; the haphazard way in which it is stitched, the puckering of the fabric, and the bright red thread reference the violent ways in which women* are treated.
